"I hope the city brings you closer to yourself."
New York City, my long distance love affair. Yes, I will always be an L.A. woman, but the streets of Manhattan still sweep me off my feet. I lived in the city when I was 18. It was here that I stumbled upon myself (in that wildly romantic, straight out-of-a-movie kind of way). Through crowded subway trains and walks in Washington Square Park, I discovered independence in the chaotic hustle that makes this city unlike any other place.

This was my first year attending New York Fashion Week and I was stoked to bring Lucky along for my travels. I know that NYC can be overwhelming, especially for first time visitors. As a west coast girl with a lot of east coast experience, here are some tips and spots to feel like a local during your trip.
Even New Yorkers like touristy places: Don’t judge yourself. Soak in the architecture of Grand Central Station. Spend an afternoon exploring the Met. Walk up Broadway for the perfect picture of the Empire State Building. This city is magic and there’s nothing wrong with seeing the classics.

Take the subway: Save your money, take the train. I learned the geography of the city by navigating the subway. It is perfect for people watching and can be much faster than a cab ride. Also, it’s refreshing to step out of the car-obsessed culture of L.A.

Let your street style be comfortable: When I was in the city, there was sun, rain, and snow. It is all about layering up and rocking comfortable shoes. My fashion choices were deeply rooted in vintage trends. I found myself drawn to the ‘60s when styling my Lucky looks. The beatnik artist. The wild west beach boy. I love feeling a story behind each outfit I create. Oh, and of course, pairing it with some killer denim.
Pizza, Pasta, Wine. Done. I don’t know what it is about NYC but the Italian in me craves all things tomato and garlic. Maybe it’s from all the walking? Here’s my short list of favorite Italian spots: Vic’s, Bar Primi, Rosemary’s, Gigino Trattoria, and Two Boots. By far my top choice is Rubirosa in Nolita. During my trip I took myself on a date here. Sat solo at the bar, drank a glass of red, and ate the most savory pizza. It was a special NYC moment.

East Village vs West Village: Just like the east and west coast, both neighborhoods are very different. The East Village reminds me a lot of Silverlake in Los Angeles. Edgier, more bohemian. The east side is where I like to go out with friends. Try the Flower Shop for a bar with ‘70s flair. Also Pianos for their happy hour frozen margaritas. The West Village is far more chic and feels more like the ‘classic Manhattan’ you see in the movies. I always end up brunching in this neighborhood. Get a reservation at Cafe Clover for the lavender waffle and avocado hollandaise poached eggs. No matter how cliché, I will always adore Jack’s Wife Frieda. I normally stop in for a midday coffee and to scribble thoughts in my journal.

Don’t be afraid to get lost: Whenever I travel, I tend to explore the city without relying on my cellphone. I found my favorite vintage shops (Hamlet’s and The Vintage Twin) by accident. If you love shopping, start in SoHo. The iconic architecture will keep your eyes up and has trendy stores for window shopping. I always have my camera on my shoulder. Ready to capture little moments that I might have missed if I had a plan.

So, cheers to your future adventures in New York City! I hope the city brings you closer to yourself. That it inspires you to embrace the present moment. And to live as authentically as possible. I am counting the days until September Fashion Week, when I get to live my alternate life on the east coast.
