Get Into Soft Grunge With One Very Artistic Family

The day we met 14-year-old ingenue Cleo Camp she was sitting on a swing, strumming a Fender, singing a sweet song she’d recently written. When she finished her tune, Cleo glanced up over her Kurt Cobain-inspired sunglasses and quipped quietly, “That’s a piece I wrote about my dog.” One of the guys in our crew, who shall remain nameless here, teared up on the spot. Everyone in Cleo’s presence that afternoon, not least of whom, her mother Lulu Camp, a painter, was smitten. Beside Cleo on the swing sat her first diehard fan, her brother Henry, an outdoorsy California kid through and through. The two of them laughed and joked for hours as they tramped through the grassy hills of Malibu and later watched their mother work on a painting in the studio, all three Camps dressed in Cleo’s 90s-esque vision of soft grunge. Kick Around in Brooklyn with Drowners

If 2013 was the year of BritPop, 2014 is the year of Brooklyn-pop. In 2013, those small gatherings found a public home in a pop-up space at the end of the Malibu Pier, a now permanent restaurant with a mega-following of celebrities and locals alike: Malibu Farms. The secret behind Helene’s foodie movement? Here’s a hint: It’s still very much a homegrown, family-run, labor of love. Take a look.
