When we first met blues ingenue Dana Williams, she had not yet graced the stage of ABC’s Rising Star. She had not yet sung her way through to the finale or won her way into the hearts of millions of Americans. She wasn’t even yet aware of her place in the series as a contestant. Still, she strolled onto the set of our photo shoot carrying an acoustic guitar, quiet confidence and the undeniable glow of talent that demands to be noticed.

Dress like a boy, feel like a girl with Diane Birch

In her own words, Diane Birch is a “singer/songwriter who lives in Brooklyn, constantly wrestles with her own mind, her own crazy world and a whirlwind of emotions at all times.” Nonetheless, this emo-indie icon manages to look continually composed and effortless, onstage and on the street, a feat she pulls off, she says, in large part thanks to her reliance on boyfriend blazers, boyfriend flannels, basically boyfriend everything, and skinny jeans. Still, it’s the girls of the world who pull her inspiration strings, particularly during the songwriting process, she says. Her advice to her own everygirl muses? “Diane Birch would encourage the girls of the world to follow their own instincts. She would encourage the absurd, the weird, the whacky. Who cares about fitting in? Fitting in is super boring.”
